点评:Eight km from Montbard along the Canal de Bourgogne the forges are easily accessible by boat, bike or feet (and of course car). This 18th century industrial site belonged to the naturalist Buffon (who also has a park and museum in Montbard) and there are some rooms dedicated to his life and work.
The site contains a number of buildings relating to the furnace, refinery and foundry. There is an excellent brochure (including English) for the site and poster notes in each of the buildings. Two working water wheels were a highlight. There is also access to one of the working families houses and a large barn like structure that gives very detailed information on the restoration of the site. About one third of the buildings are private and are not accessible.
The forges are closed Tuesday and in the middle of the day so check opening hours. You can get a discount if you have visited an associated attraction such as the Abbaye de Fontenay. There is no food on site but there is a restaurant in Buffon and in nearby Saint-Remy.
