A pleasant and postive experience despite a booking glitch

点评：Last-minute trip to the Norfolk Broads, so we had to check what boats were still available. Found one on the website, but unfortunately something went wrong just as we were about to check out. Perhaps someone else had booked that boat just before us. Unfortunately, the office is closed on Sundays even in high season, so we had to wait until Monday before we could sort it out. When we did make contact, we found the staff to be very helpful and we managed to book a different boat from Tuesday to Saturday of that week. (It's worth noting that because of the need to turn boats around - cleaning, refuelling etc - you can pick them up only from about 2.30pm and you need to return them by 9am on the last day for the same reason.) Also, bear in mind that the popular moorings - especially the free ones and those at pubs - will begin to fill up from mid-afternoon in high season, at least that is my experience, so I wouldn't expect to travel far on the first afternoon. I'd suggest having a few paid-for moorings in mind as back-up options.
The boat itself, a "Duet", was ideal for a couple: very comfortable and small enough to be easy to handle (it has no bow thrusters but a boat this small doesn't really need them, in my view). The technology on the boat is impressive and a major upgrade from the last time I hired one some years ago. For example, you can just plug devices directly into a normal UK socket and the combination of the motor and the solar panel seems to keep the batteries well charged up. The TV worked remarkably well most of the time, although we found a dead zone without any signal on one occasion. There is also a DVD slot on the TV, so next time I'd bring a few movies along. It's also worth noting that there is a built-in CD player and reasonably effective WiFi, although I tended to rely mostly on my phone's 4G / 5G connection. Another feature of the boat we appreciated was the low step at the rear and the access "door" to it. We had an inflatable kayak with us and this step proved useful for returning to the boat on one occasion when the bank was high. If you wanted to launch a kayak or any other small boat when riding at "anchor" on a broad, the platform could prove essential. (Perhaps worth mentioning that there is no actual anchor, only a "mud weight".)
Another positive is that you pay only for the fuel you actually use, so if you motor slowly it costs you less.
The only negatives about the boat were that the helming position is fully enclosed and the glass of the windscreen had a lot of glare when the sun was at a low angle. Next time I'd bring the squeegee and glass cleaner from the car, but could it be that the window glass (perspex?) just needs replacing? Another slight issue was that it took a lot of effort to open and close the sliding sunroof. Perhaps it had come off its runners or just needed greasing. These are only fairly minor negatives but I hope the boatyard will address them.
A couple of points to note: you need matches to light the cookers. The hire firm provides a box of small ones, but you really need to pack a large box (or two) of long ones. Also, we made tea from the tank water and cooked with it but didn't use it for drinking water just in case. We stocked up on drinking water from the local supermarket, but next time we'll remember to get it as part of our main pre-departure supermarket trip.
In summary, if travelling as a couple, we'd be very happy to book this type of boat again from the same firm, but next time we'd probably aim to take it for at least a full week.
