Not really a city gate

点评：Walking towards our hotel at the end of Rue du Connetable, we saw a strange construction straddling the street. It looked like a triumphal arch or a gate marking the entrance to the city of Chantilly, close to the Great Stables. From close-up, however, it was nothing but the outer wall of an unfinished building. Passing under the arch and looking at it from the other side, we clearly noticed the symmetry with the pavilion to the left of the open arches of the Great Stables’ façade. As it turns out, the gigantic Great Stables, which were built by architect Jean Aubert for Duke Louis-Henri de Bourbon between 1719 and 1740, were still unfinished when he died. But there was no money left to finish the right pavilion. So the lone wall became a kind of city gate, taking its name from the Abbey of Saint-Denis.
