Most Beautiful Lake in Indiana?
Summit Lake State Park的点评
点评：The most beautiful lake outside of Michigan that I've ever seen in the Midwest. The water is crystal clear, with visibility of at least 12 feet - highly unusual in this part of the state. It really is stunning.
The day I stopped-by, they weren't renting any of their rowboats. Seems when the wind exceeds 11 mph, US Coast Guard regs say they can't rent them out. Probably because the rowboats might be difficult to maneuver. None of the rowboats had motors. Don't know if they were renting canoes or kayaks that day.
It's an 800 acre lake and there were private boats of all sizes, including bass boats with 150hp+ motors on them.
The only problem with the clear water is that it allows weeds closer to the shore to flourish. Hence, bank fishing is extremely difficult, if not impossible. I talked to a couple fisherman coming in for the day. They reported some decent catches of keepable largemouth bass (14-inch minimum). One guy did say that the clear water presented a challenge and that the best fishing was around standing timbers.
The rest of the park is typically excellent Indiana State Park quality. That state sure know how to keep beautiful parks. There is an entrance fee, though: $9 for non-resident vehicle. Not sure what the resident fee was...$7, perhaps? Beautiful hiking trails and facilities. The lake map even shows a couple recommended "kayak trails" through the lake to follow for best scenery.
There are two wide concrete boat ramps with large parking lots. There are a couple kayak-launching sites, too.
Apparently, the place is popular with birders, too, especially during migratory seasons. When I was there in August, across a bay in a cove I spotted a Great Egret wading around and a Green Heron flying around.
