点评:On holiday in Stresa on Lake Maggiore, we decided to do the ‘touristy bit’ and took the brightly-coloured open-sided road-train tour of the main town area. The departure and return point of train is on the on the Piazza Marconi, in front of the ‘imbarcadero’ (ferry terminal) on Lungolago Umberto I. It’s on the lakeside promenade, adjacent to the main coast road, near the main car-parking area. It is just a few minutes walk from the Stresa Pier where ferryboats, to and from the Borromean Islands, dock.
At a cost of 7 Euros each, with tickets to be bought in advance from the booth near the departure point, this was a worthwhile and pleasant experience. It took about 25 minutes to meander, in a loop circuit, up and down streets and main roads, taking in some interesting and striking views. There was a pre-recorded commentary which was played through a very poor quality PA system that was mostly indistinct, but we did hear part of an English language version. There are no headphones provided or facilities to use your own. This needs improvement; maybe there could be a Bluetooth version so people can use mobile phones?
Stresa is built on a substantial hill which ascends from the lakeside to heights of 350mtrs (1,150ft) above the lake surface. The train however only climbs to a maximum height of 70mtrs (230ft) above the lake surface. The driver was remarkably skilled to be able to negotiate some quite acute corners and adeptly squeeze past parked and oncoming vehicles. The train manfully coped with the climb and didn’t appear to be adversely affected by the steepest of the roads on the route.
This is worth doing for the small outlay, the only criticism was the poor commentary sound quality and the fact that other non-English tourists found it necessary to talk loudly when the English version was playing. We gave-up trying to listen and got very little benefit of the explanation of what we were looking at.
