Visit to Nelson Mandela's Prison Home near Paarl, South Africa...
Groot Drakenstein Prison的点评
点评:(Actually this visit was in November 2016)
I thought I’d do a little video about something we did eight years ago in South Africa which turned out to be one of the most profound experiences I’ve ever had in my life.
We had visited Robben Island the year before, where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 out of the 27 years he was incarcerated and had heard it was also possible to visit Drakenstein Prison, from where he was eventually released on the 11th of February 1990.
The private prison house where Mandela lived has been left exactly how it was when he lived there and has since been declared a South African National Heritage Site. A statue of Mandela stands just outside the prison gates to celebrate is walk to freedom.
I knew that the prison had been open for people to visit. I tried really hard to get inside and eventually it was agreed, that I could meet the prison guard, Manfried Jacobs, who knew Mandela really well and was responsible for showing people around - speaking passionately about his experiences.
I’ve included some footage here of Beverley and I walking around the house which felt like a sanctuary - the building where he met President De Klerk to negotiate his release.
While we were talking to the guard outside the bungalow, he seemed to be getting quite emotional. I asked him:
“Do you always get like this when you’re showing people around…”
And he said we were the first people he had shown around for about nine months, so it was special for him and for us.
We also had tears in our eyes while he told us what he knew and had experienced with Nelson Mandela. He became very close to the man both during his incarceration and afterwards when he became president and a recognised World Statesman.
