点评：The view is a typical Wyoming view. You are definitely at a high point. But not the highest point: railroads do not like to go up and down hills, so the spot is not very good if you are looking for a good view.
Everything that the monument says about the Ames brothers is true. But what is not said is important: those brothers ripped off the American taxpayers for millions of dollars. The reason why you don't know much about Oakes and Oliver Ames is that they were crooks. Given how much government support the Union Pacific Railroad got, it is astonishing that it went bankrupt, but it did. Their company, Crédit Mobilier, got juicy construction contracts to build the railroad. They built it fast, and they built it cheap. They paid their shareholders outrageous dividends. When the UP was completed in 1869, yes, it was far less expensive and faster to travel than anything before, but it was expensive to operate. Accidents were common, as were washouts and breakdowns. Bankruptcy is supposed to help the bankrupt get started again by restructuring debt, and in the case of the UPRR, it worked! Today, the UPRR is among the most profitable corporations in the world. The UPRR of today is a fine and upstanding company.
But Ames brothers..... I walked up to the monument and urinated on it.
