点评：Some places fade from memory, but Nanaimo isn’t one of them. From its sparkling waterfront promenade to the old-world charm of the restored Old Quarter, the city still carries a beauty worth savoring. Even with its changes, Nanaimo left me with moments I’ll always treasure.
I first visited Nanaimo years ago with my family, and last month—heat warning and all—I returned to see how it had changed. The waterfront promenade was as stunning as ever: clean, wide, and alive with seaplanes, boats, and harbour views. The Lighthouse Bistro & Pub still stood, the bastion still watched over the streets, and Maffeo Sutton Park remained a perfect place to linger.
Yes, downtown has its rough patches, but in broad daylight we felt safe, and the restored Old City Quarter charmed us with its bright little shops and old-world vibe.
It’s true—Nanaimo has lost a bit of its former “place where gods lived” magic. But it’s still beautiful, walkable, full of history, and perfectly positioned as a hub for island-hopping. Transit could be better aligned with ferry schedules, and a real-time text service like Victoria’s would be a welcome upgrade. Even so, Michelle from the Transit Service Infoline turned a small inconvenience into a highlight—her warmth and helpfulness were unforgettable.
