点评：The South African Jewish Museum in Cape Town is one of those museums that quietly leaves a strong impression.
Located in the Gardens area next to the historic Great Synagogue, the museum tells the story of Jewish immigration to South Africa and the role the community has played in the country’s history. Many Jewish South Africans originally came from Lithuania and Eastern Europe in the late 1800s, and the exhibits explain how they built new lives here while contributing to business, politics, culture, and the struggle against apartheid.
The museum is modern and very well curated, with interactive displays, photographs, and personal stories that make the history feel very human and relatable. One of the highlights is the recreated Lithuanian shtetl street that shows what life was like in the villages many immigrants came from.
Next door is the Holocaust Centre, which is also very powerful and thoughtfully presented. It focuses not only on the events of the Holocaust but also on the importance of human rights and confronting discrimination today.
Even if you are not Jewish or particularly interested in religious history, the museum provides a fascinating insight into South Africa’s diverse cultural heritage.
