点评:I found this an awe inspiring experience and made point to return a second time on a subsequent trip to Tanzania. It hit me in three ways -
First the fact that that as you look over the gorge you realize you are looking at a many million year slice through time and human type species, our ancestors, walked there. At times the space is so quiet and so vast that you can almost feel it.
Second ad you listen to the guides and visit the geological dig site you realize the enormity of the work Leakey and the other geologists undertook, working in the sun with minimal tools and funding for decades before making their discoveries, in explorations that continue to today.
And third. I was enormously impressed by the guides. They were so knowledgeable and clear and patient at answering questions. One of them, Grace, described her Masai background to me and yet she had worked her way through university and is now an archeologist at one of the world’s major sites. I was humbled by her story.
The gorge and museum are absolutely a must do. I found them very affecting. On the first visit we took a car with Grace into the gorge to the see the site while on the second we concentrated on the artifacts in the excellent museum. I could have spent much longer there. I did find I understood it better on my second visit and also found it helpful to ask questions.
Finally, at a more mundane level, the museum has a lovely picnic area in the shade and clean bathrooms. It also had playful mongoose, although I expect they are not always welcome visitors.
