点评:If you are planning a trip to Namibia, quite simply, Soussusvlei is an essential part of the itinerary. Much is written in all the reviews, but I offer these tips to maybe help with planning.
1. Independent travel is of course possible, but most of the critical reviews below seem to stem from independent travel, particularly faffs associated with park entry or getting into the inner park if without a proper 4WD and trying to get a seat on a shuttle bus. So consider a guided tour, and if you can afford it, one with small numbers. Ours was for 4 clients with Hoodia Tours (we were staying at the wonderful Hoodia Desert Lodge), and out guide ascertained out interests and tailored the day to reflect that. We felt we gained so much more this uncrushed way, as well as learning much about the geography, anthropology, history and wildlife of Namibia. Plus didn't get lost trying to find Hiddenvlei or Deadvlei!
2. Early entry is recommended. If staying out of the park, you will probably arrive after sunrise, but still get to experience the wonderful colours. And it is a great time for spotting wildlife and getting that iconic photograph of an Oryx with a red-orange dune background.
3. Dress appropriately. That means flexibly. We started the day with a down jacket against the desert chill, but were soon down to shorts and t-shirts. Of course, many visitors dress 'safari-style' with long sleeved shirts and trousers. A wide brimmed hat was essential for me!
4. Climbing 'Big Daddy' dune really is a thing! But don't underestimate it, it's a 345 metre ascent, so if you're the kind of person that takes the lift (elevator) instead of the stairs, or doesn't have a head for heights, it might not be for you. I have reviewed it in detail separately, but in sum, allow two hours for the whole walk, dress appropriately and have a hat, sun glasses, water and a camera. There is a sweet spot to do it: first thing might sound great but you will be breaking the trail; late morning, you might find it to be a bit crowded and the temperatures will be ramping up.
5. If you have a decent camera, take it. It really is a photographer's paradise.
6. Allow a full day. our tour was from 06:30 - 16:30.
7. The shuttle bus drop off area gets crowded, and impersonal for lunch. As we had a private tour, we were able to enjoy a wonderful lunch just a little further on, with springbok for company.
8. There are toilets at the shuttle bus drop off point. Don't drop sunglasses or phones into the hole! Obviously others have....
