Holyhead gets even better

点评：I used to play at Holyhead every summer when my children were young. At the time my handicap was around 25 and courses like Holyhead were daunting. My handicap is now 15 and it's been great going back to play there as a more accomplished player with no fear.
The course has changed a little bit over the last five or six years since I last played there, but they have kept all the good bits. The two long par fives, and the blind shots are still there, but they have tamed so of the fiercer rough, which swallowed up balls at a rate of knots, with very little chances of finding them in the deep gorse. But hit the ball straight and you can't go far wrong.
I bumped into two members on the first tee and we joined up to make it a great experience. I rode my luck a little bit on some of the holes but, generally, I kept the ball straight and full, which helped me to get to a lot of the greens in regulation. We had a stiff breeze which was either a help or a hindrance, depending on which way we were going.
I was a bit disappointed about the 18th green being moved, but my new friends from Holyhead explained the reasons why. Although we played temporary greens on 8 and 18, you could see from the balcony of the bar what they were doing. The eight green is now being enlarged and will become the 18th when it is finished. It's only about 30 yards away from the old 18th but, crucially, it is a lot further away from the road and the houses, so less chance of stray balls escaping from the course.
The new 8th green is on the same plateau as the old one, but it doesn't look as deadly as the old one, because the old one used to be surrounded by bunkers. This was okay if you had a big enough game to fly your second shot onto the green and get it to stop but, for us mere mortals who have to rely on the ball running, the old eight was a real challenge.
So, if you are looking for a great place to play golf in Anglesey, go and try out Holyhead. You won't be disappointed
