点评:Lots of people have written mediocre reviews of this sanctuary. I am a birder and decided to check it out, and I'm glad I did--but I had binoculars and patience, and without those two things, most people wouldn't have seen much. Not only did I spot some great birds, but I really enjoyed the canoe ride. Note that the birds I saw are common for Indian birders - but as an American, they were novelties. I went during low season (December), when the birds are quiet. Here are some details:
When you enter the bird sanctuary, the person at the entrance will give you directions to start the walk. [Note that the entrance fee is now 250 rupees]. You should start looking for birds immediately. Toward the beginning of the trail, I saw a beautiful male Indian paradise flycatcher. Later on, I spotted an orange headed (white throated) thrush hopping along the trail. The pavement is uneven so be sure to wear good walking shoes.
After about a kilometer (or slightly longer), you will see a small clearing next to the small canal on your right. (This comes just after a sign that warns you against dangerous waters). There should be one man there, standing next to an old, large wooden canoe. I ended up paying 350 rupees for a tour, after he initially asked for 500. The Indian couple that tagged along paid 500 rupees for 2 people. After piling in, the canoe owner pushed us along with a long pole until we entered the main tributary for Lake Vembanad. At 7:30 in the morning, it was quiet and lovely. We saw stork-billed and white-throated kingfishers, Blue-tailed bee eaters, a reed warbler, cormorants and whiskered terns. Great opportunities for photos, as we were able to get very close to the birds in such a quiet, non-motorized watercraft.
All in all, I thought this was an enjoyable, non-commercialized introduction to the area's nature.
