点评：I have always wanted to try ice climbing. Since I was a little kid and first learned you could I thought it was the coolest thing. I booked a session on a group climbing day in 2024 but it was canceled due to weather being uncooperative. I am glad I didn’t give up and waited another year. I applied the fee from the previous year (it is non refundable!) for a private one on one day and boy was it worth it.
If you’re considering trying ice climbing, I would do whatever you can to spring for a one on one in lieu of a “group day”. The entire session is tailored to you and your goals. If you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, Marty and Alpine Endeavors will ask pointed questions to plan an outing you will learn and be inspired by afterward.
I wanted to take advantage of the cold snap mid January and just went for it. We headed into Platte Cove near Hunter mountain and after a short hike in, stopped for an intro lesson on how the gear works. How to use the ice tools, how to kick the crampons. How to read the ice where to swing where to avoid it. He set up a top rope system. Assessed my belay technique while he climbed up then came down, sent me up twice, before suggesting we keep hiking down to the bottom of the ravine and climb up the 6 or 7 waterfalls out! What a trip! I left the day wanting to buy all the gear I could and immediately get back out there.
It may be expensive for some but a good guide is a professional at making you feel like it was worth it. And it was. Every penny! He took some great pictures to help the memories last, so I could be present in the moment. That is why guides are worth the investment! Freeing up bandwidth for you to enjoy the day and get the most out of your experience.
