点评:Great house on the outside, completely rebuilt in the inside, and a mighty uninformed docent. She said nothing about the architecture of the place. She gave no details about how the original furnishings might have been arranged in various rooms or what works of art hung on the walls (of course, nothing remains after years of vandalism). Surely there are old photos and records she could have drawn upon. All she talked about was how rich Otto Kahn was.
She was impressed that Otto Kahn hired the Olmsted firm for landscaping and credited his vast wealth. So what rich people didn't use Olmsted? Greenhouses and driveways and vistas all over New Jersey, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island and beyond were designed by Olmsted for similarly wealthy men. Otto Kahn just went to the go-to guy.
The docent was also impressed by two Renaissance statues and again talked about Kahn's money. In those days, every wealthy man imported architectural elements from Europe. Planting Fields sports enormous gates from an English manor. Samuel Untermyer in Yonkers had Stanford White bring him back Roman columns and fountain components. San Simeon might be the tops in this area. And as far as Oheka's expensive slate roof from Vermont goes, the roof atop the mansion in Old Westbury Gardens is from England. And when it was redone a couple of years ago, the old slate quarry in England was reopened.
It was an odd presentation possibly because so little of the original Oheka was left, but the emphasis on Kahn's money without mentioning everyone else's money, and the context of that old Long Island way of life, was exasperating and a little suspicious. Never have I been on a house tour that reduced a man to his cash like this.
That said, Gary, the man who purchased and restored Oheka, was clearly motivated by love, and that's greatly to the place's credit.
