点评:We are doing the 23 day Cental Asia (5 ‘Stans’ tour, plus Mary & Merv. This review is part 1 of 5 covering Turkmenistan.
Our guide Ana met us at the airport after am ‘interesting’ passage through customs. We headed toward Mary - a drive of some 4-5 hours with Ana and our driver Roshan.
The Bazaar was worth a look as was sampling some of the local foods :)
We explored the Great Kyz Kala, the ancient Citadel & the Ibn Zayd mosque at Merv (amongst other things)
Then returned to Ashgabat.
WOW !!!!
Ashgabat is like nothing I’ve ever seen. After the devastating earthquake that levelled the old citiy in 1948 it has been totally rebuilt It is now an incredible array of architectural wonder, all in stunning white marble. Furthermore, it has extra wide roads with beautiful white street lamps, plus the cars, buses & trucks are all white. (Bar a very small number of exceptions in light grey & gold).
At nighttime it is equally impressive with multi coloured building lights offset by the green lights around the base of the light poles.
The National Museum of Geology was worth a look as was Nissa and too many other sites to spell out.
We farewelled our very safe driver Roshan before another night at the magnificent Sport Hotel.
Ana introduced our new driver Meleise. We departed for the first leg of the 4 - 5 hour drive (on the worst highway I have ever traveled due to the high & low temperatures & large number of trucks) to the desert to spend a night in a Yurt (another great experience) which included a stop at the natural gas crater burning for the past 55 years
The second 4-5 hour leg from the desert Yurt to Dashoguz followed. Throughout our driver Meleise was amazing. He knew every pothole, every off-road shortcut & made an extremely difficult drive safe and memorable.
Ana was a great guide, spoke excellent English, was knowledgeable, entertaining, kind and had a great sense of humour.
Steppe Journeys…. Perhaps my favourite holiday ever!
Turkmenistan will be hard to top!!!
Steppe Journeys……
