点评:As you stroll along Main St. in Tobermory, you can find the The Mull Museum in a rather unobtrusive building next to the more grander bank. A small museum crammed with information about the history of Mull and its people and punches well above it's weight.
History from Neolithic times to modern day.
Covering crofting and the land displacements. Seafaring and naval history, with the Spanish galleon and ship wreaks, Ferry and Lifeboat stories. Along with the WW2 naval base used for Anti-submarine training.
There are also sections on famous inhabitants and visitors to Mull and Tobermory. The natural environment and geology, with the Mull Igneous Complex being one of the most interesting areas of geology globally. These being just some of the interesting displays to wander through.
The museum represents various periods of history in themes making the visit all the more interesting.
One display is of the working implements used by craftsmen on the island in the past
Another displays a domestic scene from a ‘blackhouse’
There is a display of documents and artifacts about the wreck of a Spanish galleon wrecked in Tobermory harbour.
Not only does the museum display material from the distant past, it also deals with episodes of the island’s history, like the second world war. Tobermory was an important naval harbour and Mull saw its fair share of military action. The Museum gives a taste of this era.
Although the museum is quite small inside, it is packed with artefacts and displays of of Mull’s history. It is run by volunteers, who have extensive local knowledge and it is well worth it to spend some time chatting to these very friendly and informative people. They add to the whole museum experience.
There is no entrance fee as the museum is funded by donations so please if you visit make sure you leave a good donation as we did.
