Disappointing
惠特比港的点评
点评：I was very disappointed with our visit to Whitby. Looking at it online it seems pleasant and historic with plenty to see. We expected it to be busy with it being a touristy place but it was on another level. It is so difficult to get down the streets, there were so many people and they were very rude and ignorant. They literally stare you down while intentionally getting in your way. The pavements are that small that crowds spill over into the roads and people will just drive at you so fast, we saw so many people almost get hit it was beyond belief.
We found the place itself to be quite strange. We started on the side of the river where the abbey is as that was where our cottage was. It was nice with a lot of pleasant shops and restaurants and such. We noticed some rowdy pubs and a few groups of rough looking people, but it was nothing to when we got over the other side of the river. As soon as you cross over to the opposite side you feel like you've walked into a council estate. I was confused by this at first until I realised there was a Wetherspoons right in front of us. But even walking along, there were people lined up along the side of the harbour drinking alcohol with barely any clothes on, people asking you for money, and a lot of rough people that only communicate by shouting and swearing. It was very disappointing, really. Over the course of a few days we just found that what could be a nice place was ruined by awful people, they were either behaving in horrible, boisterous, trashy ways (as it gets later in the evening all you can hear all around you is drunken louts shouting and swearing everywhere you turn.) Or you are facing arrogant people who look at you and treat you like something they stepped in and ruin meals by becoming loudly abusive to waiting staff or shoving you out the way because they think they are above you.
It is such a shame as if you wander out very early in the morning before all the crowds hit, the scenery is so nice and we got some amazing photographs of everything. Unfortunately it is being let down by over crowding, over tourism, and for some reason a surprisingly high number of unpleasant people. The most pleasant interaction I had while there was from an Asian tourist thanking us for waiting aside while he took a photograph.
If you spend enough time looking at the shops as well, you will come to realise that every single one is selling the same things as the other. Stuff being sold in the tourist shops is literally exactly the same things in each one, but it is twice the price on one side of the river. There were a whole bunch of jewellery shops, all claiming to be selling their own "handmade" Whitby jet jewellery. Not very easy to believe this when you realise that they are all claiming to be independent shops that handmake their products, yet every one of them is selling exactly the same jewellery with absolutely no variations between them and they all had exactly the same "50% off sale" signs in the windows. Clearly they were all owned by one person/group and were scamming people claiming to be selling "handmade" jewellery that was just mass produced. Out of curiosity I did a reverse image search of one item and found the exact same thing to be for sale all over the internet with varying claims of where the stone used was from depending on the site.
Really what could be a beautiful place to visit is just completely taken over with groups/people opening the same shop repeatedly with a different name, even the arcades were evidently owned by the same people as we saw the cleaning staff going from one to the other in the same uniforms before the crowds arrived. There are some nice places to eat, but again, the place for some reason seems to attract very unpleasant people so you are either having to listen to drunken people shouting their conversations all over the place or stuck up people abusing the staff. Or in one of the places we went you get spoken to like filth from the staff and treated like an inconvenience.
Another problem is with cars. There are so many dangerous drivers there, it was actually scary. There were people speeding down busy areas, people driving at crowds of people, tour buses scraping along parked cars, drivers that aid no attention to what was going on around them. It was unbelievably dangerous, I would never take my niece and nephew there as it was just too dangerous with the cars alone. If you are arriving by car, well good luck trying to find a place to park. The cottage we stayed in offered free parking. This turned out to be in a residential area fifteen minutes away from the cottage. We saw car parks but they were totally full no matter what time of day it was, same with the on street parking near the front. It is that bad we made the decision to not use the car at all for worry we may not be able to park it again and it just didn't feel safe or easy to drive around.
I felt very let down and disappointed and can honestly say I have no desire to return. Like I say, it is sad because there is some beautiful spots and scenery if you can get there early or late enough to avoid the crowds. We went out at around 7:30am to see the harbour and beaches properly, crowds are arriving by 8:30. If it is summer you can see them less crowded in the later evenings as well while it is still light because all the people cram themselves into pubs and beer gardens, so every single one of them ends up looking like the fish crowds from sponge bob.
Maybe it is different on a quiet time but I still felt very underwhelmed by it and wouldn't bother again.
