Best Course in an Area of Many Great Courses
Royal Birkdale Golf Club的点评
点评：Royal Birkdale is one of the Open sites on the northwest coast of England along with Royal Liverpool and Lytham St. Annes. In my opinion it is the best of the three although Lytham St. Annes is a close second. A list of the winners is a who's who of modern golf with Peter Thomson winning the first two and then Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Ian Baker-Finch, Mark O'Meara, Padraig Harrington and finally Jordan Spieth. Surprisingly missing are Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods. As one of our caddies stated "You won't find any Todd Hamiltons winning here".
The course was in excellent conditions with the best fairways and greens of the three. The greens were also much faster than the other two Open courses and several others we played in the area.
The clubhouse is a more modern design than most in England with a distinctive clock tower that can be seen from every hole on the course.
One of the best features is that on all but a few holes you see nothing but the hole you are playing with each hole being nestled between fescue covered dunes.
There are plenty of the typical pot bunkers that Open courses feature, but if you know how to play out of them they are not as threatening as they look. If you don't know how then it will be a long day and a high score.
On the 16th hole have the caddies show you the small plaque marking the spot where Arnold Palmer blasted a six iron out of a seemingly impossible lie to claim the title in 1961.
All in all this is a joy to play and will create golf memories that will last a lifetime.
