Lovely Setting Undermined by Parking Charges

点评：I am writing to raise a complaint about the car parking charges at Rutland Water, following a recent visit.
We live locally in Brooke and simply wanted a change of scenery from our usual walks. We drove to Rutland Water expecting to enjoy a straightforward walk, only to be very surprised by the £2.00 per hour parking charge. Unfortunately, our walk took just over an hour, resulting in a £4.00 charge for an hour and seven minutes.
As we had already paid for a second hour, we felt pressured to stay on to “get our money’s worth” and stopped at the Harbour Café for a drink, despite not particularly wanting or needing refreshments as we live so close by. What should have been a simple local walk ended up costing us around £15 once parking and refreshments were added.
Rather than being able to relax, we found ourselves watching the clock, rushing our drinks and leaving abruptly to avoid being charged yet another £2.00 for an additional hour. It completely defeated the purpose of visiting. The experience felt neither welcoming nor enjoyable.
As Rutland residents paying approximately £5,000 per year in council tax, it is deeply disappointing that there is no consideration for locals. At the very least, residents should be offered free or subsidised parking permits. The current system actively discourages local people from using the facilities.
It was also disappointing to note that some areas of the park and certain facilities appear rundown and poorly maintained, which makes the high parking charges feel even harder to justify.
Sadly, this experience has put us off returning altogether. We would also be unlikely to visit the Harbour Café again, despite liking it, as a simple coffee ends up costing £5.60 per person once parking is factored in. This feels short-sighted and ultimately damaging to local usage and businesses.
