点评:As two recently retired maths teachers taking our first ever break out of school hours, Samos had long held a draw, and our visit met every expectation and more. Visiting the cave where Pythagoras had retreated to in order to avoid persecution and still teach was very special. The journey to the caves took us up on winding hillside roads up the eastern flank of Mount Kerkis, the extinct volcano, and second, the highest mountain in the Aegean all with spectacular valley views. Up we went on the road track to the point where we had to then climb on foot the steps first to the lower chapel and then steeply onto the caves themselves. Here, Pythagoras lived in one cave and in a second one, he taught and preached around all that time ago, around 400 BC. We could only imagine the types of lessons Pythagoras taught while living on Mount Kerkis, but for us both, it was a poignant moment to stand where once he had taught, relaying the same maths theories we had taught to hundreds of students over our career. So to all the students we had told about Pythagoras and Samos, whilst the threatened coach trip with them didn't happen, we did visit and would still recommend they do the same at so some point, it is very special
