点评：Nestled in the Bavarian Alps between Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Kloster Ettal was one of the most impressive churches we visited during our trip. Even before stepping inside, the massive dome and grand Baroque façade dominate the landscape and make it clear that this is no ordinary monastery.
Founded in the 14th century, Ettal Abbey remains a thriving Benedictine monastery and is home to around 50 monks. Additionally, it houses a private high school (Gymnasium) for roughly 200 students. Knowing that it continues to function as an active religious community and place of education adds a special dimension to the visit. The abbey feels alive, not simply preserved as a historic monument.
The highlight is undoubtedly the church itself. Originally built in the Gothic style between 1330 and 1370, it was transformed into the spectacular Baroque masterpiece seen today after a fire in the 18th century. Walking through the doors, we were immediately struck by the soaring dome, intricate frescoes, lavish decorations, and beautiful natural light. Every detail seems designed to inspire awe. What we appreciated most was how peaceful the abbey felt despite being a popular destination. Visitors can admire the architecture, light a candle, spend a few moments in quiet reflection, or simply sit and take in the beauty of the space. The combination of art, history, faith, and Alpine scenery makes it a truly memorable stop.
