Another of Lecce’s fine baroque churches and free to enter.
Basilica di S. Giovanni Battista al Rosario的点评
点评:Situated not far from the Porta Rudiae this is another of Lecce’s fine churches. Also known as the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista (Church of John the Baptist), this elaborately fronted church was the last commission of the prodigious Leccese architect Giuseppe Zimbalo as he died before it was completed, and a quick-fix wooden roof was put up, instead of the dome he had intended. This may explain why it unfortunately looks like it is still undergoing some renovation and the scaffolding collar the church wears, presumably to stop bits of masonry failing on the parishioners below, does somewhat ruin the external view. But inside it is really impressive and takes the shape of a Greek cross, with a spacious octagonal chamber covered by wooden trusses. Along the internal perimeter are twelve small chapels with intricate Baroque altars, all arranged within the vaulted chapels of the octagonal cross.
This one is free to enter and it is well worth doing so.
