Stunning modernist architecture and fascinating exhibitions

点评：We planned our visit to the Heydar Aliyev Centre as the highlight of our city break in Baku and we weren’t disappointed. It was brilliant.
Although it’s a little way from the old town, it’s well connected by the metro and a short, well signposted walk. The building is stunning - a vast, exciting, modern tribute by Zaha Hadid (architect) to Azerbaijan’s first post soviet leader. Although it’s now a few years old it looks as fresh as when it was opened and has been immaculately maintained.
Inside, the vast space curves and undulates - sometimes it’s hard to see where the floor stops and the wall starts! It’s all brilliant white with huge amounts of light coming through the vast windows. There are several different exhibitions inside and they’re all fascinating- from modern recycled sculptural pieces to a history of Azerbaijan’s traditional musical instruments, and a display of soviet era limousines! Something for everyone.
The facilities are really good - lots of spotless loos and a lovely ‘coffee and cake’ bar which served us gorgeous chocolate cake.
We weren’t disappointed but I’d recommend taking a whole day out to see it so you don’t need to rush.
