点评:Visited the Agoatini’s pop up at Latk Hill on the Easter weekend. Pop up is a bit of a misnomer because it’s in a substantial building which I’ll assume was the Lark Hill Restaurant and Agostinis are testing the water out there.
The venue is lovely (nothing anyone can do about the weather and wind chill!). Staff were good and attentive early although dropped off a bit as it got quieter into the afternoon.
The food was ok and in most circumstances that’d be fine, except when you’re upselling yourself as a quality stop and charging fine dining prices.
Once again, a two course set menu - what is it with freaking Canberra and set menus, are restauranteurs lazy, just greedy or both - at $65ph + a 15% public holiday surcharge on a Saturday it was a pretty expensive afternoon for what we got. I wasn’t going to stand at the register and argue the surcharge but it’s rich if they’ve got to pay PH penalty rates on a Saturday.
Our table had the calamari and shared the antipasto platter for entree There were no complaints to either but nor were they anything fantastic, was just food. The calamari was no better (perhaps not as good) as you’d get at a pub or club.
For mains we pretty much all opted for pork belly or gnocchi. In what seems to be the way everywhere, the pork belly lacked well cooked crackling. Spicy sausage mix with it was ok but needed a sauce of some description. Gnocchi was just gnocchi and bland.
We paired with a couple of bottles of Lark Hill Sangiovese and a Riesling. Understanding this is a showcase for their wines, $85 a bottle for a Canberra local at the winery that you can get off the shelf for $30 is a bit rich. We like to support local business but that’s just taking the piss.
Regardless, we had a nice afternoon with friends but won’t be heading back in a hurry given the food was average at best, the price was quite high for what was presented and of course you can’t really make an afternoon of it because you have to drive out there, so there’s a convenience factor
