Spectacular engineering but spoilt by excessive litter and squalor

点评：We went on this journey as part of an organised group tour of Northern India, and I was looking forward to seeing some spectacular engineering and amazing views. The engineering of this railway certainly lived up to expectations, but many of the views were obscured by excessive overgrowth and litter. Seats were hard and uncomfortable, and unfortunately there weren’t enough seats in the first class carriage for our entire group although we were provided with cushions by our tour organisers. Toilets were filthy, but on a 5-hour journey couldn’t be avoided, and there were no obvious alternative facilities at the various stations stops on the way. The final hour of the journey nearing Shimla was probably the best, with better views and much less litter and I envied some other tourists we met from another group who had traveled on the final leg only from Shimla, returning by car. Overall, a five-hour journey was four hours too long.
