点评:The Shell Museum is a bit of an institution in Lakes... but it's tired, it's faded and needs a revamp. The new owners have continued to try to keep it alive without revitalising the business. The business model is set to fail and could easily be turned around.
Clearly some of the items fascinate people which is why there are still people paying to enter, but ... this is where the business model fails. After entering and noting that nothing had changed since the mid- 1980s... I questioned my nostalgia. If they made the museum a gold coin donation or a reasonable entrance fee, people would be more likely to revisit. But $10 an adult for entering a room that has remained status quo for so many years ... there is no sense to that. Even though it hasn't changed, I would be more likely to visit again if it was a reasonable small entry.
The business could then focus on merchandise and selling more of their day to day goods. With a higher turner of merchandise because whilst you are there you can see the history of the business...effectively they are inviting people back, encouraging them to visit because they have something special to offer that other businesses may not.
The store really needs a revamp as well... it's cluttered and it looks like a market rather than a store. Merchandising with a clear story to tell would encourage people to buy something touristy. Right now, it just looks like a outdated store that relies on it's history rather than it's future.
This could be something incredible... but it's going to take someone with a vision to take it to where it needs to be.
