点评:I’ll preface by saying that we are regulars to Tatton and love the place. This is specifically about the Yuletide event.
We took two children under 5. The event was ok, but honestly we were slightly disappointed, as the cost of the ticket suggested there would be more to it.
There were three main parts, a storytelling area and music, the fire show and the lights walk.
The storytelling area we immediately avoided as getting a three year old to sit still for 30 minutes is an issue, so I can’t comment on this part. We went to the music tent which had a couple of benches and the rest was space to dance. It was ok, some nice music but it wasn’t really somewhere to stay for more than a quick look. Perhaps later it’d get more of an atmosphere but when we went in it was a few children bombing around and perhaps five people listening to the music. I think some lights would’ve made it a bit more exciting and atmospheric.
You could buy marshmallows to cook at the fire pit and that was fine. But there was no more food or drinks in the gardens at all (all the catering vans were outside of the garden and no alcohol actually allowed IN the Yuletide event). Although I understand this is probably to protect the gardens and reduce litter, it meant the event felt a little flat, as nobody could have a beer or mulled wine and watch the music or get a nice snack for the kids halfway round the event.
The fire show was ok, two people and it was hard to see as half of the space was cordoned off. The lights walk in the gardens itself was lovely with some very good actors doing light puppets. A little scary for toddlers perhaps as it’s very dark and the creatures were somewhat eerie (eg goblins) but that’s on the parents. Our two loved them. The shadow puppet part was fantastic for the children. The walk only took about 15 minutes as it was only round the right side of the gardens through the Japanese Garden. They definitely could expand it with future events if they have the interest.
And that was it! All done. Nowhere to sit and eat or drink, so we headed back out of the gardens to the food area.
The Dunham Massey event is definitely superior. Even though the area is about the same size. Why? Lots of different things to see. Lots of helpers guiding the way. Little stalls halfway round to sit and enjoy a mulled cider or something to eat. More stalls near the start/end. Hot chocolate, cookies, alcohol, sweets, hot dogs, lots of choice. Lots of photo opps around the different areas eg lake, house, stables, during the walk. A funfair near the car park! You can spend hours at the Dunham event.
Tatton is a much smaller scale event and that’s understandable, but cost about the same as Dunham. I don’t think we would return to Yuletide unless they add to it next time as Dunham is more bang for your buck. Having said that, the children did enjoy it for the hour we were there, and I think if you came just with adults you could spend more time here (but remember- no alcohol allowed!)
