点评:Decided to take advantage of the rarely seen sunny weather to climb a few mountains. We live in Newcastle, we didn’t want to compete with the warm weather in the afternoon so we set off just after 7 am and parked at Withburn car just after 9am. We paid for 4 hours but in hindsight we should have added an hour or two as a buffer. Our parking expired 30 minutes before return, we were lucky not to get a ticket but the rush back was not a pleasant experience.
We found the climb from Withburn steady but still taxing. I am not a seasoned climber but I was still able to get by making use of a few rests. The temperature at the start was 16 degrees which was perfect.
At the top, we met people who had gone via Stryden edge and they said it was a bit more scrambly. The views at the top were breathtaking. We had lunch here but didn’t stay long because it was windy and cold.
We did not go back the same way, instead we took the path on the right of the original climbing path which was via Lower man. For some reason this was steeper than the path we chose and I think if we had come up this way, we wound have found it harder.
There is no requirement to be super fit to climb this mountain, there were people of all ages climbing and taking their time, however there was the odd Fell runner to make you feel super unfit. I would however recommend a level of fitness with the ability to scramble up rocks or brace yourself when on a downward momentum, I found it easier to use walking sticks. I would recommend loads of liquids however, there is no shelter so women would have nowhere to take a pickle.
