点评:Had been planning to tackle Helvellyn for some time ( a previous trip derailed by an injury suffered elsewhere in the UK) ; and had warmed up nicely on some smaller fells so was confident enough setting out from Swirls car park about 10.30. It was a cool day ; but the forecast advised the really nasty weather wasn't expected until late afternoon so I thought I was equipped for the ascent...
And for an hour all was well . No problems with the hike , steep in parts but footing fine , stopping for photos , all good. But then that "really nasty weather" arrived hours ahead of schedule and I swiftly found my clothing was hopelessly inadequate in the face of the wind/rain/hail that soon had me soaked through and frozen to the point my hands could no longer grip my walking stick. Long story short I was forced to turn back a little below the first summit ... and just as well I did as the changed conditions and my own cold-induced weakness meant I took twice as long descending as I had going up.
Disappointed that I couldn't finish the climb (and I certainly wasn't the only one abandoning their efforts that day) but happy at least to get down safely. The real lessons I took from this were : Always be prepared for very sudden changes in the weather - which in any case will often be very different a couple of thousand feet up from ground level ; and make sure you have proper waterproof clothing . Plus don't be as silly as I was and forget to take your gloves !
But hey this experience has not put me off the mountain. Health and fitness willing I will be back to have another crack soon (hopefully on a brighter day) as I saw enough to confirm my belief that this is an extremely interesting peak to tackle. Was quite crowded even on this day so I imagine in sunny weather it could be rather busy ; but the route appears well marked and nothing too tricky at least as far as I went . So there is always next year ...
