点评:The free car park is a 10 minute walk through the pretty village of honey coloured Cotswold stone houses. There is a regular shuttle bus alternative for those with mobility issues. Next to the car park is the 12th century church which is well worth a quick visit. The Morris family grave designed by Philip Webb is to the right of the churchyard entrance behind a bay tree. As you approach the Manor you pass the Morris Memorial hall 1934, memorial cottages designed by Webb in 1902 and Manor cottages built, I think I recall, in 1914.
I personally loved the furnishing simplicity of Kelmscott, however the Manor does contain many wonderful Morris textiles, paintings by his friend and colleague Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and pottery collected by WM on his travels. The Morris women, were also well represented, talented women in their own right.
I can't speak highly enough of the docents in every room. Never intrusive but if asked a question their knowledge was fascinating, wide ranging, sometimes humorous and an invaluable addition to our enjoyment of the Manor.
We were disappointed in the food at the cafe. The cakes were not home made which a very pleasant woman confirmed when I asked citing staff issues and the quiche we ordered with a salad was unfortunately tasteless, also bought in I suspect.
Despite this we had a great visit. The Manor is a lovely house, it could so easily have been lost to the nation, I for one thank goodness it wasn't!
