Beautiful slightly dotty house, impressive fountain, lovely watermill, excellent tea
Stanway House & Fountain的点评
点评:Really glad to have caught this historic house on one of its open days.
It’s a beautiful Jacobean building of honey-coloured Cotswold stone. There are lots of attractive, interesting rooms to see - and their genuinely lived-in, slightly messy and eccentric atmosphere is refreshingly different from the sometimes rather impersonal feel of National Trust places. (Sad not to be allowed to take photos inside.)
The gardens aren’t brilliant, but the famous fountain truly is impressive. I spent a while just staring up at the highest arc of the water and found it really quite magical.
The working watermill is an absolute gem - the whole old stone building rumbling with the wheel and grindstone. Bought a bag of flour.
There’s also a beautiful big tithe barn.
We rounded off our 3-hour visit with delicious homemade cake and tea in the stables, served in lovely old-fashioned bone china by delightfully friendly staff.
