点评:This tour was incredible and I will definitely be looking to come back/do other wild cave tours! I had first done one of the walking tours and while that was also fun, this tour blew that one out of the water!
Our guides Josh and Hillary were amazing. They helped everyone feel really at ease while still pushing people to really test themselves. Plus the context they provided about how the cave was formed, the human history of the cave, and key notable features throughout the tour like fossils and other ancient historical artifacts really created a whole additional dimension to the experience!
Few notable highlights:
As you crawl through tunnels that have never seen soot from torches, you are surrounded by shining gypsum which is beautiful!
The ability to use your head lamp to just illuminate any part of the cave that you want to see is truly a huge perk of this tour. Even on sections where you are just walking through other normal tour areas. The ability to point your lamp anywhere you want gives you a glimpse into the cave no one else gets!
The personal feeling of accomplishment as you almost solve puzzles to figure out how to overcome obstacles throughout the cave!
The group dynamic is an integral parts of the experience. Whether it is taking someone’s pack when they can’t fit through a tight spot, giving heads up to big puddles or other instructions for the trail ahead, or just cheering one another on as we all collectively and individually tackle challenges we’ve never faced before, the group dynamic really made the experience super special!
If you’re trying to figure out if you are physically prepared for this task…
This was a big question of my own when I was looking at reviews and other things so I’m hoping I can provide insight to some future potential visitors.
First thing I want to say is that the rangers adapt the course based off the group which means 2 things. 1. You can find some comfort in that the course will be at least semi designed around your limits. (Although please be mindful of the rest of the group. If you insist on going but are unwilling to even try many things, you will be stopping the entire group from experiencing those things. Try to go in with an open mind!) 2. There are many possible variations of this tour so I can only speak to the version I experienced, although if my rangers are to be believed, they said that we went on some of the hardest paths in the cave and while I could see them just saying it to boost our ego, they seemed sincere and mentioned how some of the courses we did they haven’t had a chance to do in a while since most groups weren’t up for those challenges.
The second thing I will say is that while you are absolutely crawling on the ground at times or even dragging yourself on your stomach inch by inch, that is certainly not the majority of the tour. A lot of the tour is just walking between places. The crawling was broken up into separate 3-15 minute sections and there was usually a break after each crawl. Don’t get me wrong, it is still exhausting and should not be underestimated, but it’s generally short enough that most people who are reasonably in shape should be able to manage getting through them as long as they are willing to try and challenge themselves.
The third thing I’ll say is to take the listed requirements on the website seriously. You need proper boots or the rangers will rightfully not allow you on the course. Make sure you have the proper boots and make sure they aren’t too worn (look at the website for details). In addition, take the body size requirement seriously as well. I went with a friend who was exactly 42” in his widest point (the listed maximum on the website) and he barely made it through some of the points. He did make it through each time, but he absolutely struggled at the tightest areas and needed the rangers’ guidance to get himself unstuck at 2 spots. (Although he also had a great time and we are already talking about other similar experiences we want to try in the future!) The website tells you exactly what you need to know. Read it and follow it!
The last thing I’ll say is that the rangers clearly know these paths like the back of their hand and that provides a ton of comfort. On the challenging parts, you can try to approach them on your own if you want but they can also walk you through exactly what rock to put what foot on and when to move what hand if that is more of your comfort as well. In addition, while I would avoid doing what I’m about to say in order to experience as much as possible, it did seem like there were alternate routes at many of the most difficult points if you really really couldn’t handle it anymore.
One last tip I want to give is to just stay calm throughout the tour. As with many things, if you start panicking and flailing your arms or trying too hard, you will just hurt yourself more. I got out with very minimal, practically invisible scrapes, but if I panicked and was just trying to grab at everything or hitting my arms and legs against edges of rocks I could imagine having much more bruises and not enjoying the experience as much. Trust yourself and your rangers, and you’ll have a great time!
Sorry for the super long review but I’m writing a lot because I almost didn’t go on this tour because of my nerves going into it, but I am so glad I did and I hope to help some other future travelers who might also be feeling uneasy about this. Yes it was exhausting, yes I am absolutely sore, but it was totally doable, and totally worth it! This was a totally unique, incredible experience! Before, I couldn’t believe how many 5 star reviews this had, but now I totally get it and am adding to the count. Do yourself a favor and book this tour!
(Just for context, I am a 28 year old who is not in or out of shape. I’ve never done anything like this, but I started going on bigger day hikes in various national parks about once a year a few years ago, and enjoy the more casual shorter hikes as well on trails near where I live. That being said, I don’t consider myself an avid hiker. If you think you’re like me or more, you should be totally fine. Having gone through the whole experience, while I’m definitely tired and fully satisfied, I could have handled quite a bit more than we did. So also, if you don’t go on any hikes but are reasonably active, I think you can still handle this, but it will be more challenging for sure)
