点评:A well-organized centre to learn about the Death Railway. I like that the museum is small and concise, offering a general overview of the railway’s history with interesting anecdotes without being too lengthy. The concept of accompanying the history lesson with a real hike, complete with audio points, to witness the decades-old locations for ourselves, is genius.
I took on the longer hike to Hinok Cutting and was impressed by how the trek had been maintained and curated for the average visitor. Safety precautions at the beginning, a vending machine to provide snacks and drinks, well placed audio points, sporadic benches, subtle hints of the railway ruins to discover, built-up staircases to traverse difficult terrain.. these are some aspects of the hike I greatly appreciate.
That said, I felt some things could still be improved on. When I first entered the centre, the relative silence was shattered by some Thais celebrating gleefully after coming back from the hike. I felt the solemnity of this memorial should be better enforced. Also, the use of walkie talkies to track visitor safety felt a little intrusive while I’m on the trail – e.g. walking through the serene forest attempting to imagine horrors of it’s past, when suddenly the radio squawk to life trying to ascertain someone’s position. I felt GPS tracking tags can be used to discreetly track the geolocation of visitors in this case. Walkie-talkies can still be brought along to establish communication if the need arises.
All in all, I felt this whole experience was very nicely done, and it was incredibly generous of the Australian government to grant free entry to this amazing centre. Hence, I bought two of their subtly designed shirts and a raincoat at the souvenir shop to show some support.
