点评:Impressive ruin in impressive location.
However, it is rather lacking in onsite interpretation and way-marking. I had the audio guide but gave up using it after two stops as the content was dull and I couldn't find the other stops. Museum is nicely presented but rather static (which is a shame as there are interesting artefacts and stories to tell) and, again, not well-signposted meaning that I visited it from the wrong end!
Great place for taking photos but the day we visited there had been an event shortly before with lots of portaloos spoiling the view from the distance (although I did get a nice distance shot later on, from outside the wall.
The interpretation of the adjoining manor house seemed inadequate land the roughly cobbled (?) Courtyard, surrounding modern paths, bizarrely modern benches, neglected-looking grass and half-hearted planting seemed incongruous.
On the other hand, good to see the grassy field between the entrance and the abbey being left long to benefit wildlife. It did also very much visually enhance the approach from that direction and I imagine was similar to how the approach may have looked in medieval times.
The admission price was very expensive for a family. Judging by the crowds coming up the 199 steps and the small proportion of them paying to visit the Abbey, it seems that lots of other people feel the same. It's a shame because this site is managed by HE on behalf of the government because of its importance to our heritage and price should not exclude people from experiencing it.
