Iconic, beautiful Whitby Abbey
惠特比修道院的点评
点评：Whitby Abbey must have looked amazing before the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII as the ruins are spectacular and very much a local landmark. This was my second visit to the Abbey, the last one being in the late 1980s when I only managed a few photos with my film SLR.
On this visit, having a digital camera and a decent phone camera, I managed to get some very pleasing shots. When it's busy, you can get the odd tourist in the way, but patience does pay, and it's very easy to chat to other visitors whilst you're waiting.
Do look out for the small details that most visitors will miss. As it's a ruin, there aren't a lot of figures or faces on the exterior of the building like there is on somewhere like York Minster, but it's worth looking for the ones that are there.
The small museum near the abbey is worth a visit and there is a shop catering for history and Dracula fans.
I walked up the 199 steps to the abbey. It's quite a climb, but not unmanageable. There were people much older than me heading up there. If you want to avoid driving into Whitby to visit, look for the signs as you approach the town - they lead you to the top of the headland where the abbey sits and there is good sized car park.
If you want a real treat, go up the 199 steps to the abbey after dark. It's quite atmospheric up there and you can get some really good night shots of Whitby itself. The abbey is a bit trickier as there is a high wall around it, but at points it is low enough to peer over.
