Visiting the monastery of Filerimos - Jul 2024

点评：The monastery of Filerimos , one of the many attractions of the island of Rhodes - plus the fact the it is in close vicinity of Rhodes Town - like 15-20 km distance only - it is also assuring the influx of tourists.
We were there in July 2024 - and arrived about noon - hence the tour bus arrived at that hour ... so, wear a hat, and some conformable shoes to walk the grounds of the monastery.
To visit the place we've payed 6 Euros each , ( however if you just want to take the Via Crucis to the Filerimos Cross , now that is free of charge).
The monastery was (re)built by the Knights of Saint John, after they conquered (bought?) the island of Rhodes in the 14th century. It was actually building on the site of a former Byzantine compound dating several centuries back and the monastic place was use until the Ottoman Turks conquered the island in 1523.
Nowadays , it is a very interesting place to visit - especially by those who are interested in history (and medieval architecture), nonetheless it is also worth it to spend some time and money for those who are not into those.
You can visit the site in about 1 hour ( including the Cross ) and the Byzantine fortification (that was recently partially rebuilt).
Overall a nice place to spend 1-2 hours, spending them actively and learning about the islands history - I do recommend you include this place on the list of places to visit when in Rhodes.
