点评:Ballintubber nestled below the roadside & adjacent a graveyard is deceiving in its "plainness" but I knew i would return after a visit 25 years ago. There was "something about it", I texted to my wife the previous day. And so ther is & was. The stonework for a start is finer than the churches built in the 19th century, as Catholic emancipation released pent up energy that saw a frenzy of church building competing with the multitude of established anglican churches from the time of English established authority. Ballintubber abbey has a homely welcoming aspect, a cosiness that belies its rough stone interior, softened with a whitewash and windows that seemed to glow, sharing the outside light with the visitor. We were delighted to hav Pauline our guide sharing her own "glow" with us priviged guests, of this ancient Abbey. God forbid some day they hav a robotic guide, like a newsreader reading a prepared script or worse, a robot guide. God help us if they do because we will not get a sense of Pauline's knowledge of history, marking not just the abbeys main events in its long life but the context, immediate & social, in which key historical abbey events happened. Thank you Pauline for your enthusiasm (infectious much), your insights - anecdotal & historical with no little humour & charm & your refreshing approach. My apologies for thinking initially that you might be just a typical sort of civil servant who would be just going thro the motions. Delighted to hav met you & hope to meet again in that big old abbey in the hollow. Maith agat.
