点评:Once again a museum that I was initially hesitant to go to. A hosiery museum I wondered, was it worth it? We found instead that it an excellent speciality museum which is actually two museums (one about hosiery and the other about religious works and old architecture). Both collections interested me. They are spread over two levels of the Hôtel de Vauluisant rebuilt in the 16th century.
The hosiery museum was so unusual that it comes more easily to mind. I particularly liked the information given on nalbinding, the precursor to knitting, originating in the 12th century. The majority of the exhibition is on the automated knitting which developed in England in the 1500s' and was later transferred by various interesting means to Troyes in Aube. There are displays of these machines (still old by our standards), knitted clothes (some quite modern) and some very interesting explanations, in French and English, on the walls.
The Historical Museum of Troyes and Champagne (the other part) contains religious works (paintings, sculptures and stained glass windows) as well as elements of half-timbered houses. The many old cabinet paintings, where you have wings that open to show the full picture, are very memorable. The stained glass collection is displayed backlit with extensive explanations in French as are the statues. Lots of beautiful architectural fireplaces in the building to admire as well.
