点评：We spent the day in Arles on May 27, 2025. The Espace Van Gogh building was originally the Hôtel-Dieu hospital, where Van Gogh was a patient after cutting off part of his ear. The garden has been restored to look like his painting of it, which is shown in a nearby reproduction, and is quite pretty. It is surrounded by arcades that one would hope had a room or exhibit relevant to the subject, but think again: apart from a small shop selling all sorts of Van Gogh trinkets, there was nothing else Van Gogh-related. When I asked about this in the tourist office I was reminded that most of his subjects had been destroyed and I should not expect to see much.
But Arles uses its link to Van Gogh to attract tourists and should try harder! For example, the Di Vinci home in Amboise has reconstructed rooms showing how he created pigments and found inspiration in everyday objects. Surely, there is something more Arles could do for those Van Gogh fans who make the trek to the town.
