点评:The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) are both housed in the old Patent Office building. In SAAM, there were many interesting exhibits, both permanent and temporary. The exhibits give a broad picture of American art from the colonial period until the 21st century.
The three photos I attached are from "The Shape of Power: Stories of Race and American Sculpture", which looked at how various sculptures portray race and racism. "DNA Study Revisited", 2022, by Roberto Lugo is a self-portrait with patterns that represent his four ancestral groups--Taino, Spanish, African, and Portuguese. In "Las Twines", 1998, by Pepon Osorio, the twins fear they will become separated following the death of their mother since they appear to belong to different racial groups. "Farm Workers' Altar", 1967, by Emanuel Martinez was where labor activist Cesar Chavez broke his 22-day fast in 1968. Four hands with different skin tones represent the different racial groups. The Thunderbird at the center represents the United Farm Workers Union.
There is a lot to see here as well as in the National Portrait Gallery. You can easily spend several hours here.
