Chiesa Di San Nicolò L'arena的点评
点评：The church of San Nicolò l'Arena in Catania is located in Piazza Dante and attached to the adjacent Monastero dei Benedettini di San Nicolò l'Arena.
The exterior is incomplete due to the precarious financial situation of the monks during the 18th century. The facade has a monumental feel, while the half complete columns invokes a surreal spectacle. Holes throughout the facade meant to affix decorations gives the look of a building damaged by war.
The interior is vast and divided into three naves by huge pillars with a transept surmounted by a slender dome. Virtually all the chapels and altars have large paintings, but otherwise bare. Each chapel has information in both Italian and English. The high altar has a grandiose design integrated with the organ and the choir. The organ seemingly forming the reredos of the altar. There's also an interesting area behind the sacristy where there's a room with memorials dedicated to the fallen of WWI.
Entry to the church is free, but visitors can pay a charge to climb the tower. Sadly, it was raining on the day of the visit which was a shame. At a height of about 66 metres, the tower is reputed to be the highest point in Catania. As an aside, if you do the guided tour of the Benedictine Monastery, part of the visit includes visiting a balcony overlooking the high altar of Chiesa di San Nicolò l'Arena.
