wonderful tour of a superb monastery

点评：Nice informative tour through an interesting abbey, including a library, refectory and as special gem the romanesque frescoes of the old church (maybe the oldest of the whole country). The tour lasted a bit less than two hours and we were told tons of anecdotes about the history. I knew e.g. that Marie Antoinette stopped here on her way to France beforehand, that Mozart was a frequent visitor as well was news to me.
The monastery is about half an hour by train from Linz. It receives less visitors than e.g. Melk but is even more welcoming. Tours take place at 2 pm on weekends. It is not that crowded, on my tour we were a total of 6 people.
Keep in mind that this is a Benedictine Abbey so unlike all other catholic orders as one can expect they forbid photography in at least one spot. Unfortunately for Lambach this spot are those of the Romanesque frescoes (and if you are told that this is due to conservation reasons, then keep in mind that photography without flash is not doing more to the paintings than watching it with your eyes does on a scientific level).
