Great Hike Close to Kanab!
Wire Pass Trail (Buckskin Gulch Access)的点评
点评：Great hike especially if you haven’t been to Antelope Canyon. Only $6 permit too. We have done Antelope several times but still enjoyed the variety here. The entrance can be tricky- right turn off 89 just before a curve onto House Rock Valley Road. About 9 miles on that road, you will pass a gravel parking spot on the right if someone brought a low tide vehicle or long camper as the likely won’t make an upcoming dip.3 miles to park there and get to trailhead for Buckskin Overlook Trail to Wire Pass Slot. It is close to Buckskin Gulch trailhead but people prefer to go the Wirepass access. Road isn’t bad unless it is wet and then a no go.
The first 1.7 miles trail is an easy wash with small rocks, but no shade do go early, before 9am in summer. Red rock but not too exciting if you have seen such before. Once at Wire pass, photo ops start right away. Climb over or shimmy under a tree trunk, walk under a dead big tree that fell into the slot, next you go down a 12 foot ridden ladder - sturdy and relatively easy. Then an opening before continuing on to through the second part of wire pass slot. This part gets a tad narrow, and has two parts than you may need to sit down to get to the next level as it is a good 3 foot drop. Going back up that later is a harder if you are tall or long legged. You’ll come out by a big opening, with an arch in the wall on the right. Immediately after the arch is petroglyphs only about 3 feet off ground - mostly antelopes. It was much smaller than others we saw at Moab or St. George but many people were looking for it and missed it.
Next you choose left or right. Most people go to the right. We did too but ran into water up to the need with mud so decided, to start our u-turn there. With round trip it was just under 5 miles and we took 2 hours with many stops for pictures. We enjoyed it - we recommend it.
