点评:Shame on me for not visiting Garry Point Park before. With its rolling landscape, endless views of the Fraser River, and connection to the history of Steveston Village, this 30 hectare park – open since 1989 – has a little something for everybody. Indeed, it was quite bustling when I visited at the tail end of July.
After taking a couple hours to explore the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, I decided to wander over to Garry Point Park. It was a hot summer day, but I enjoyed it because it made the park that much livelier! I know it’s been nearly 2 years since all of the COVID restrictions went away, but it still fills my heart with joy to see so much people out and enjoying the beautiful day. There was a lengthy line at the popular Garry Point Grill & Fish N’ Chips (I did not attend); there were a number of people flying kites on the open grasslands; I witnessed a wedding party doing a photo shoot; numerous people enjoying the wide, flat trails; and, of course, countless people – young and old – enjoying the expansive beach and shoreline. In short, seeing all of this provided a temporary reprieve from the hurly burly of daily life!
Of course, that’s the beauty of Garry Point Park (I keep wanting to write “Point Garry Park” haha). You can make of it what you want. If you want to learn about the history of the park and its strong connection to Steveston Village, there are informative plaques and write-ups throughout as well as the telling Fisherman’s Memorial Needle; if you want to learn about the important role Japanese-Canadians played in the development of Steveston as a salmon fishing powerhouse, you can visit the beautiful Kuno Garden; and if you just want to relax and enjoy the natural beauty, well, you can do that, too!
Perhaps I will visit next year during the cherry blossom season . . .
