Stunning Island with wildlife and rock formations

点评：We took a boat tour on the Iolaire of Iona to this geological marvel off the coast of Mull. Unfortunately we unable to land due to the construction of new steps and landing area, but our trip around on the island by sea, was spectacular.
This little island (½ mile long and ¼ mile wide) and is reminiscent of scenes from a far off galaxy. The hexagonal columns were formed by the cooling of basaltic lava over 50 million of years ago, by volcanic eruptions that spread across to Northern Ireland. 1000's of years of waves crashing against these columns created the magnificent Fingal’s Cave and it's famous acoustics.
As we circumnavigated the island we enjoyed some of it natural beauty and wildlife. we were joined by a flock of Puffins who flew off the island and swam and fished near our boat, we saw Fulmars and Kittiwakes gliding on the wind near the cliffs. Gannets diving for fish along with Cormorants and Shags. No whales and dolphins but we did see a grey seal.
Staffa was hardly known until 1772, when the botanist Joseph Banks highlighted the wild, natural beauty of the island. It soon became a must-see location. Famous visitors have included Queen Victoria, Lord Tennyson, Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson and John Keats; all fell under the island’s spell.
Staffa came into the care of the National Trust for Scotland in 1986, and designated a National Nature Reserve in 2001.
There are not many place in the world that you get to see unique geology and special wildlife with a picturesque backdrop from another world. But Staff gives you all of this. It was well worth the visit and would recommend this if you are visiting Mull or Iona. The crew of the Iolaire of Iona were also a great to be with for the morning.
