点评:The little town of Estavayer-le-Lac with its traditional architecture, its cobble stoned streets and its remains of city walls on top of a superb location by Lake Neuchâtel is an attraction in itself. Its single most important sight though is the castle of Chenaux on an elevated part at its northeastern end, today a monument of national importance, which goes back to Savoy times. It can be visited in parts, but not any of its rooms, where there are now various district offices.
Entrance from the south is through the 'Tour du Jaquemart', the gate tower, which is the only one that is square. From here one goes on a covered bridge towards the big main tower, the round 'Donjon' (Keep). The bridge with a nice view to the West Tower crosses the former moat, which has given the castle its name. 'Chenaux' in French means 'channels'.
The 'Donjon' can be visited. Going up a spiral staircase one comes to the top level, where the beautiful wooden roof construction can be admired as well as the view towards Lake Neuchâtel. Next to the keep is another bridge, the one of the southeast entrance, which can also be used by a car, that leads through a gate to the former 'Burghof', the courtyard in front of the 'Palas', where now the offices are located. To the northeast of this open space is a turret, called 'Pigeonnier'. Going around it one can access the 'Tour Rouge', made from brick, to the north of 'Château Chenaux'.
Not many people go up this slightly neglected round tower with its spiral staircase. There is a strong smell of pigeon droppings and it is also the reason, why on top there is a glass cover under the roof. If one feels like more towers, one can go and have a look, at least from the outside, at the 'Tour de Savoie' (round) and the 'Tour de Lombardie' (square), which are part of the city walls.
