点评：Brickendon and its neighbour Woolmer reflect a specific aspect of the transportation regime in Tasmania. For a few years the 'assignment' system operated whereby landowners were provided with the services of a number of convicts to provide the labour to operate their estates.
At Brickendon the estate operated as a crop growing enterprise. Some of the assignees had specific crafts which were relevant to the estates needs whilst unskilled workers were used in general farm duties such as digging ditches. The estate owners did not pay wages but had to provide accommodation and food for their assignees.
Most of the buildings at Brickendon date from the early nineteenth century and are all described in detail in the leaflet which is given to all visitors.
There is also an introductory video which sets the background to the operation of the estate.
The estate house is one kilometre away along a driveway. It is not open to visitors, although its gardens can be viewed. The return walk is a pleasant way to round off the visit.
For those staying in the Launceston area a visit here is highly recommended.
