点评:The cheapest and easiest way to get here is to take the subway to People’s Park Station on Line 2 or Line 17 and exit the subway station via Exit B and you will be at the North Entrance to People’s Park.
People’s Park is open from 0600hrs to 2200hrs and while admission into the park is free, some exhibitions being run within the confines of the park may charge admission. When I was there, there was an exhibition showcasing Qing dynasty era fashion that was free but next to it was a separate exhibition showcasing flowers that charged admission.
People’s Park is a place where you can experience what the locals do for leisure. The place boasts nice scenery, with some beautiful bonsai gardens within, teahouses, an amusement park with kiddie rides and a lake where you can rent row boats and explore the streams winding through the park.
Making your way through the park, depending on the time of day, you may be able to see the locals sitting under the shade, drinking tea, and chatting, playing mahjong, or playing Chinese chess. You may join in the fun by ordering tea and snacks at the teahouses, and if it appeals to you, try out the Traditional Ear Cleaning service.
One of the key highlights of the park is the Matchmaking Corner, located near the West Gate. Here you will find hordes of anxious parents posting photos and personal bios of their unmarried sons / daughters on paper cards and putting them up for anyone interested. A rare sight in today’s digital age. Some of them even managed to drag their reluctant sons / daughters along to introduce to prospective spouses, very often resulting in hilarious situations.
One thing to note is depending on the time of year when you visit, if you are visiting in the summer or spring, do bring insect repellent along as the mosquitoes are a real menace. I visited in October (Autumn) and I was already getting bitten all over. If in doubt, maybe pack a pair of arm sleeves along, just in case.
