Southern Charm, Grace and Beauty....and Golf!
Old Waverly的点评
点评：Played this course after two weeks of intermittent rain at the end of February.... and played its sister course across the street, Mossy Oaks. It was in good but wet conditions. Old Waverly golf course was created by George Bryan (CEO of Sara Lee Foods and benefactor to Miss State, and West Point). The course winds it's way gently through the rolling hills, forests and a few lakes and streams of the North Mississippi woodlands. In addition the course and it's accompanying Villas and homes are situated about 10 miles outside West Point, MS... home to Ms State University.
The practice area is adjacent to the clubhouse and features a large grass driving range, short practice area and two putting greens.... take advantage of this before your round. The course was CPO, due to recent rains but still played in a little less than four hours. The course is traditional in design with hazards of water, plenty of sand and woods surrounding the holes. Greens were fair and fast with undulations and some multi tiered. Yes, some holes we would have benefited from some familiarity, but overall a very fair course. (We played the replay, so 36 in the same day and the course was just as enjoyable the second play.... with a TERRIFIC replay rate). BTW, if you are military bring your ID, they provide a generous discount. Some of the holes have houses overlooking the course but I never felt there were houses impeding or too close to the holes.
Enhancing our golf experience was staying and eating at the course. My son and I were fortunate to stay in the "villas" overlooking the course at Mossy Oaks, with four rooms and a common area. There was no one else that night in our villa, so for $145/night we felt like kings as the sun set over the course and the skies filled up with stars, before we headed over to the Waverly club mansion for dinner. We had no idea of the treat that was waiting for us at dinner.
When you arrive at the Old Waverly clube be sure to someone show you the different rooms and history of the club, including Camerons (a full Scottish bar imported by Mr. Bryan) and some of the formal dining rooms upstairs. Brilliantly decorated with both old school Scottish and Irish decor, plus some items of local charm and significance. We ate downstairs on this Sat Night in February...and had the catfish and grits, plus the steak and local vegetables and were blown away... simply stunning and our server, Bailey was attentive with excellent suggestions on Appetizers (firecraker shrimp) and dessert... southern peach cobbler topped vanilla bean ice cream and a pinch of cinnamon.
After a great nights sleep we enjoyed the buffet at 0730 and were the only ones there early for a generous and traditional breakfast. We "finished" the day playing Old Waverly and then jumped across the street to Mossy Point, with a shower at their club in between. The club enables you to play a second time on either course for their replay rate... a real treat.
These courses are "off the beaten path", about two hours from Jackson and Memphis, but boy are they worth the drive. I can imagine a golf trip for 8, renting the four shared rooms, and common area becoming a great memory for the next buddies trip. Charm, grace, gentleness and class are the words that come to mind when I think of Old Waverly. You wont' be sorry you made the drive. The rates vary with the time of the year and go up significantly in the villas if it's a "football weekend" but factoring in the entire experience, especially with the replay, we left shaking our heads at the value proposition that this course and it's amenities present to the common man.
